Our Services

Our Services

At Tankerdale, our approach has always been to restore and conserve furniture and joinery using a combination of traditional techniques and materials, and the best in modern technology. Our aim is to ensure objects look well cared-for but not over-restored: our philosophy is to undertake conservation to a level that suits an object’s setting, character and context. Our areas of expertise include:

Furniture Conservation and Treatments

This is the core of our work. Our approach is to respect the original construction and finishing of a piece and even its later repair and interventions. Techniques are matched and surfaces retained wherever possible, always with full consultation with clients and curators.

Cabinet making and replica work

This is a small part of our current workload, but important skills to retain when working on period furniture. Our foundation 40 years ago was as furniture makers.

Marquetry

Marquetry, both in metal and wood veneers is a strength and its techniques have led us to develop less interventive methods of replacing losses in furniture. We also undertake engraving and cleaning to metal surfaces.

Carving

Replica and conservation carving is undertaken in house and with our associate Kate Hanrahan. We have significant experience in the treatment of seventeenth century lime wood carvings through to eighteenth century neo-classical details.

Lacquer and decorated surfaces

Oriental and European lacquer is a speciality treatment that we have undertaken for a long time. However, this is one of those subjects that proves that the more one knows about it, the more one needs to learn about it. International knowledge and treatments are changing all the time and it usually prudent to keep interventions to a minimum until a full knowledge is gained. We are striving to keep up to date by attending courses and conferences all over the world.

Textiles and Upholstery

We frequently work alongside textile conservators as our disciplines cross over on upholstered furniture and objects such as state beds. State beds are something of a speciality, having been involved with over thirty. Upholstery and re-upholstery of historic seat furniture is undertaken in house along with our associate upholsterer.

Disaster Response

John Hartley has been directly involved in the salvage of two unfortunate major historic house fires at Uppark and Clandon. Both have brought specific challenges and issues to resolve. More minor issues with flood and water damage are commonly encountered and resolved.
